MFM FC sinks Rangers at the Cathedral (Match Report and Reactions- Audio)

Rangers International Football Club of Enugu lost their first game at the Cathedral under Coach Benedict Ugwu as MFM FC won their second game on the road this season in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

The Flying Antelopes came into the encounter fresh from beating Sunshine Stars on Thursday but couldn’t take their chances against a compact MFM FC on the day despite starting the tie as the better side.

Olawoyin came very close in the 39 minute to give the home side the lead but his low drive was inches off the goal mouth.

Rangers still pushed forward in trying to create another chance but this time it was at their own disadvantage, as Chuks shot MFM FC into the lead in the 44th minute after a fine counter attack which found him at the edge of the box unmarked to hand Coach Bolus side the lead heading into the break.

Rangers increased the tempo of their attack after the break and came close in the 57 minute as they searched for the equalizer. Nwokeji saw his well taken free kick parried by the Bayomi towards the crossbar to save MFM FC blushes.

Substitute Godspower tried an audacious back heel just inside the box in the 73rd minute after a goal mouth scramble, but couldn’t find the net.

MFM FC who have been defending throughout the second half had an opportunity to double their lead in the 79th minute when Azeez weak header could not beat Seidu in goal for the home side.

In the 90th minute Rangers got their biggest chance, Bayomi made a double save to deny Ifeanyi George, both sides could not add to the tally as Benedict Ugwu tasted defeat at home.

 

Reactions

Coach Tony Bolus who was excited to take all three points said he was happy to come back home while speaking exclusively to 9jabuzzer.com.

“I’m happy to come back home, you know I have been with Rangers in 2016, won the league with them and this is my first time of coming and am very grateful I could get the away points.”

While Rangers International team manager Amobi Ezeaku said the team need to improve as he looks ahead of next game.

“There is need for improvement, you are as good as your last game, we played wonderfully well but we lost, we would have love to play well and win but we will go to Rivers United with the loss in mind, we go to that game with optimism, we go to that game with hope, there is no cause for alarm, the league is just starting, there is no panic at all.”

Both sides will return to action in midweek for match day 4 ties; Enugu Rangers will visit Port Harcourt for a showdown against Rivers United, while MFM FC will host Warri Wolves.
