Nigerian celebrity boxer KSI retains title

KSI Celebrates

British entertainer of Nigerian origin Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji known online as KSI has retained his ‘YouTube Championship Belt’ via a majority win of fellow internet star Logan Paul.

Both YouTubers met for the rematch of the celebrity grudge match at the Staples Center in California in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The first fight between the duo in August 2018 ended in a majority draw at the Manchester Arena, UK after 6 rounds under amateur rules.

But their rematch in Los Angeles took a professional dimension as KSI emerged victorious to retain his red and gold YouTube Boxing Championship Belt which he first won after defeating another British YouTuber Joe Weller via technical knockout in February 2018 at the Copper Box Arena in London.

26-year old Watford born KSI won via split decision 57-54 and 56-55 on two judges’ scorecards while the third judge had Logan ahead 56-55. The victory was however aided by a 2-point deduction after referee Jack Reiss penalised Logan for two technical fouls; holding and hitting his opponent while on his way down and still hitting him despite being down on the canvass in round four.

The lucrative fight fetched both KSI and Logan a guaranteed sum of $900,000, per the Californian State Athletic Commission.

Meanwhile, on the undercards earlier, British boxer Billy Joe Saunders earned an 11th round knockout over Marcelo Esteban Coceres to retain his WBO Super Middleweight title.

The bout, devoid of any real action in the previous 10 rounds sprang to life in the penultimate round of their scheduled 12-rounder as Saunders (28-0, 14 KOs) dropped Coceres (28-1-1, 15 KOs) three times to persuade referee Ray Corona to call of the fight 1 minute, 59 seconds into the 11th round.

The Liverpool born fighter who earned about $750,000 from the fight later turned his attention to boxing’s biggest star and new light heavyweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez:

“Canelo if you want to become four-weight champion, take me now because this is the time to make it happen,” Saunders said after his victory.

A Saunders vs Canelo and a Saunders v Gennardy Golovkin fight have Kong been mooted as possibilities and it remains to be seen if any of the aforementioned bouts will see the light of day next year.
