Rangers International Football Club of Enugu have qualified into the group stage of the 2019/2020 CAF Confederation Cup courtesy of an away goal rule after beating Togolese side ASC Kara 1-0 in the second leg playoff tie at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to keep the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.
The Togolese side came into the encounter with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Lome, and needed to avoided a defeat to progress as well.
Rangers took the lead in the 19th minute when Chinonso Eziekwe tapped in a low cross delivered into the box by Olawoyin.
Kara would have drawn level in the 21st minute, but Kossi failed to make contact with a loose ball in the Rangers box.
Kara came close once again in the 33rd minute but Rangers goalkeeper foiled the move to ensure Rangers went into the break with a goal lead.
After the break, ASC Kara increased the pace of their game, as Rangers began to show signs of tiring out, but one quick counter by the Flying Antelopes was missed by Ifeanyi George in the 54th minute, his one on one chance was well saved by the Kara goalkeeper.
Ifeanyi also came close in the 59th minute, his effort this time was inches wide the near post.
Despite Rangers slow pace in the second half, ASC Kara could not find the vital goal that would had seen them through at the expense of Benedict Ugwu’s boys.
Rangers head coach Benedict said without God that victory wouldn’t had been possible..
“I thank the almighty God for giving us victory, because without God there is nothing you can do, we know the game will be difficult, what we have been praying for, for us to score first and God has answered our prayers for us, we needed only one goal to qualify, we missed goals, we thank God that we were able to score successful, I said that, well that goal is important to us, have told them if they control the game we will qualify.”
Meanwhile, goal scorer Chinonso Eziekwe said he is very happy to score the only goal that saw Rangers through.
“I thank God today, am very happy today, to witness this victory today with Rangers, I really appreciate God, is only God that can do it. Am so happy that am the one that qualified Rangers to the next group, it’s only by God’s grace, I am very thankful today.”
