The Black Queens of Ghana became the latest high profile name from Africa that will be missing in next year’s Olympic Football event following their shock exit to Kenya on Tuesday at the MISC Kasarani Stadium .
Gentrix Shikangwa scored a 99th minute penalty for the Harambee Starlets of Kenya to advance 1-0 on aggregate, after holding out for a goalless draw a week earlier in the first leg 3rd round Olympics qualifier in Ghana.
While Kenya will have a chance at making it to Tokyo next year with a fourth round tie against Bostwana or Zambia in November (Zambia leads 1-0 from the first leg, with the second leg tie scheduled for tonight), coach Merry Tagoe’s tutored Black Queens will bid their time for another four years for a chance at a first appearance at the games.
African giants Nigeria will also miss out on the Olympic train after the 9-time continental champions were dumped out on away goal rule by Ivory Coast, 1-1 it ended at the Soccer Temple in Agege, Lagos following a goalless first leg action in Abidjan.
The Bayana Bayana of South Africa and Zimbabwe were also eliminated from the qualification series, leaving Cameroon, Ivory coast ,Zambi, Bostwana and Kenya in the race for Africa’s sole slot.
