Ahead of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 4 showdown, Head Coach of Akwa Starlets, Caleb Esu has reiterated his desire to keep his side in the topflight at the end of the 2019/2020 season.
In an exclusive chat with 9jabuzzer.com, the former Calabar Rovers gaffer who guided Starlets to promotion disclosed that his main objective is to retain his team in the premier league.
“First of all my very priority is that any serious minded person must have an objective or goal in any of his endeavors, my objective in this very arrangement, is to make sure I retain Akwa Starlets in the premiership”
Coach Esu also made light-work of the 3-day tournament as he stated that the main deal which is gaining promotion into the Nigeria Professional Football League was done and the Super 4 is just a formality.
“We have scale through the hurdles of the NNL, the Super 4 is just a formality, we do our very best to make sure that we maintain our own, in as much as this four team competition is concern”.
Akwa Starlets, Jigawa Golden Stars, Adamawa United and Warri Wolves will be battling for the right to be called the overall league champions after all four clubs gained promotion to the first tier of Nigeria league football, the NPF L last season.
Akwa Starlets will face Warri Wolves on Friday, in a game that will pitch Ngozi Elechi and Caleb Esu for the first time since both worked together as coach and assistant coach respectively at Go-Round FC. However, Coach Esu who took charge of his team’s training session also spoke on the preparation ahead of the tie against Warri Wolves.
“All along we have been preparing before now, we played the national league, and we gained promotion to the premier league that means we’ve been working”
“At a time with that promotion, we have to continue from there to see how Akwa Starlet will be able to make it even in the premiership this season”
The NNL Super 4 will start on the 13th and ends on the 15 of September, with all matches to be played on knock-out basis at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
